Boulder Scientific Earns Prestigious ChemStewards Tier III Certification From the Society of Chemical Manufactures and Affiliates
Mead, CO – June 1, 2018 – Boulder Scientific Company’s Mead facility has earned the ChemStewards® Tier III certification, the highest ranking that can be achieved through the environmental, health, safety and security management program for the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA).
ChemStewards® is an adaptable, industry-developed program designed to help the specialty chemicals industry meet its commitment to continuous improvement and to reduce the environmental footprint of its member facilities. The program offers a three-tiered approach to participation, with key performance requirements for each tier. Unlike the first two tiers, which SOCMA members must adhere to as part of their membership, Tier III is voluntary and requires applicants to go above and beyond the minimum for federal environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) compliance.
To qualify for this “Excellence” Tier, facilities must sign core principles, complete security requirements, meet specific metrics obligations and requirements, have one documented management review meeting, and complete a third-party verification of management systems at the Enhanced Performance level.
“Health and safety have always been a priority at Boulder Scientific, from production to handling, storage, packaging and shipment of our products. Every procedure is designed to safeguard our employees, customers, community and environment,” said Terry Krafft, Boulder Scientific’s Chief Technology Officer, who launched the company’s continuous improvement program. “Achieving ChemStewards Tier III status increases our credibility in this area and allows us to demonstrate our commitment in an unbiased way.”
SOCMA recognizes Excellence Tier facilities with a plaque and also highlights those companies in ChemStewards’ publications and social media platforms.

Mead Employer Earns Pinnacol’s Circle of Safety Award
Winner meets high bar for workplace safety and risk management
DENVER, Oct. 26, 2017 – Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado’s leading workers’ compensation insurer, is honoring Mead-based Boulder Scientific with its 2017 Circle of Safety Award for the company’s exemplary performance in safety, risk control, and financial and claims management.
“This year’s Circle of Safety winners recognize that workplace safety is about much more than checking some boxes,” said Phil Kalin, Pinnacol’s president and CEO. “These employers are creating a safety culture that permeates everything they do, and the result is a healthier, more productive workforce.”
“It’s also important to note that the majority of these businesses are in high-risk industries such as construction, manufacturing and health care,” Kalin went on to say. “It’s especially important that businesses whose employees face some of the potentially riskiest workplace conditions put so much focus on eliminating and managing those dangers.”
The Circle of Safety Award was created with the understanding that exceptional risk management is the result of a circle of many people working together. From top management and frontline employees to Pinnacol representatives and the policyholders’ agents, everyone plays a role in making Colorado workplaces safer. These Circle of Safety winners embrace risk management and get their employees home safe every day.
Pinnacol policyholders were eligible to receive the Circle of Safety Award if they met the following criteria:
- Pinnacol policyholder for at least four consecutive years.
- Experience modification rate (the employer’s claims costs compared with the industry average) of .85 or less in the current policy period.
- Combined four-year loss ratio (claims paid by Pinnacol divided by the premium paid by the employer) of less than or equal to 35 percent.
- 80 percent or more of all claims reported within 48 hours over the past four years.
- Two or fewer notices of cancellation each year – When employers pay their bill late or not at all, they and their employees can be at risk.
- No non-compliant audits – When employers do not complete their audit correctly or at all, they are at risk of paying too much or too little for their workers’ compensation coverage.
- Currently hold the State of Colorado’s Cost Containment Certification, which helps employers prevent workplace injuries and control insurance related costs
- No fatalities.
- Pinnacol-approved return-to-work program – These programs help get injured employees back to work as safely and quickly as possible.

Boulder Scientific Company Announces 2017 Distinguished Lecture
Mead, CO – February 20, 2017:
Boulder Scientific Company today announced that John Hartwig of the University of California at Berkeley will be the 2017 Boulder Scientific distinguished lecturer held at the Chemistry Department of Colorado State University. The Boulder Scientific Company Distinguished Lecture Series has been held every year since 2006 and has featured both academic and industrial chemists mainly working in the area of catalysis. The lecture series has featured three Nobel prize winners: Richard Shrock of MIT, Robert Grubbs of CalTech, and Dr. Negishi of Purdue University. Boulder Scientific Company is a Colorado-based manufacturer of specialty organometallic chemicals such as metallocenes, boron compounds, Grignards and other specialty organic chemicals used in the life sciences and industrial chemistry. The title of the lecture is “Selective Functionalization with Large and Small Catalysts”. The lecture will be held in room A101 of the Chemistry Building on March 21, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.
About Professor John Hartwig:
Summary: Professor Hartwig’s research group focuses on the discovery and understanding of new reactions of organic compounds catalyzed by transition metal complexes. These findings result from a combination of organic synthesis, organometallic synthesis and mechanistic analysis of catalytic systems.
Detail: The Hartwig group is currently investigating the selective catalytic functionalization of alkanes and arenes, cross-couplings to form arylamines and aryl ethers from aryl halides or sulfonates, cross-couplings that directly convert carbonyl compounds to ?-aryl carbonyl derivatives, new catalysts for the hydroaminations of alkenes, catalysts for the enantioselective and site-selective allylic substitution, and catalysts for transformations of precursors to biofuels and renewable chemical feedstocks. His group has conducted extensive mechanistic investigations of each of these types of reactions. Through these studies, they have revealed several new classes of reductive eliminations, discrete compounds that functionalize alkanes, unusual three-coordinate arylpalladium complexes that are intermediates in cross-coupling, the first compounds that oxidatively add ammonia to form monomeric products, and the first transition-metal amido and alkoxo complexes that insert unactivated alkenes. In addition to these research activities he has authored the textbook titled Organotransition Metal Chemistry: From Bonding to Catalysis published in December 2009.
